Protect your move: Loss & Damage Options

Option 1 Basic Value Protection

This is the most economical coverage option available for your shipment. It provides basic protection at $0.72 per pound per item—the minimum level of responsibility a carrier must assume for household goods. If an item is lost or damaged, compensation is calculated as $0.72 times the item’s weight. For matched sets, coverage applies only to the individual damaged or lost item, not the entire set. This coverage is included at no additional cost.

Most economical. Lowest level of coverage.

Option 2 Replacement Cost Coverage with $300 Deductible

Full Value Protection with a $300 Deductible This option offers comprehensive coverage for your shipment. The carrier’s maximum liability is the declared shipment value or $9.16 per pound, whichever is greater. If an item is lost or damaged, the carrier will repair, replace, or reimburse you for the loss—covering any amount beyond the $300 deductible. The deductible applies to the entire shipment, not each individual item.

Ideal coverage if you’re willing to cover minor losses or damages up to $300.

Option 3 Replacement Cost Coverage with No Deductible

Full Value Replacement Coverage This option provides full value protection for your shipment. The carrier’s maximum liability is the declared shipment value or $9.16 per pound, whichever is greater. If an item is lost or damaged, you’ll receive a repair, replacement, or reimbursement based on its full value.

Highest level of coverage. If something is damaged or lost, we replace it.

Understanding Valuation vs. Insurance

While valuation and insurance may seem similar, they serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.

Valuation establishes the level of responsibility between you and the moving company. It determines the compensation you’ll receive from the mover in case of loss or damage—but it is not insurance in the legal sense.

Insurance, on the other hand, transfers the risk to a third-party insurance company in exchange for a premium. In Washington, only licensed insurance agents can sell insurance, meaning any coverage purchased through an insurance company is separate from valuation.

It’s important to understand that declaring the value of your goods does not mean you’re buying insurance.

Third-party insurance cannot replace valuation coverage. This chart details the three choices for valuation:
